{"id":982,"date":"2022-08-22T21:19:52","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jruppert.oucreate.com\/?p=982"},"modified":"2022-08-22T21:19:52","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:19:52","slug":"summer-of-fieldwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jruppert.metr.ou.edu\/index.php\/2022\/08\/22\/summer-of-fieldwork\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer of fieldwork"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This summer was a rare opportunity in which <em>ALL<\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jruppert.metr.ou.edu\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\">group members<\/a> got to be out in the field to support the collection of observations, across a range of meteorological contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Ruppert, Theresa Lincheck, and Emily Luschen participated in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/precip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PRECIP 2022<\/a> field campaign (Prediction of Rainfall Extremes Campaign in the Pacific). Theresa traveled to a small island called Yonaguni, Japan, while James and Emily were supporting operations in Taiwan. PRECIP&#8217;s mission is to use radar and radiosonde observations to sample and better understand extreme rainfall, which comes to this region in the form of typhoons, afternoon downpours, and the southwesterly summer monsoon (the \u201cMei-yu\u201d). These measurements are critical for characterizing lake upwelling and nutrient transport, which helps sustain the local fishing industry. Andrew served on the crew of one of the windsond vehicles (shown below).
