Group PI James Ruppert appears second from the right.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PICCOLO is the U.S. component of the broader U.S.-German-French <a href=\"https:\/\/orcestra-campaign.org\/intro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ORCESTRA<\/a> campaign (Organized Convection and EarthCare Studies over the Tropical Atlantic). PICCOLO involves collaborations with Florida State University (Allison Wing), Colorado State University (Michael Bell), and the University of Toronto (Morgan O&#8217;Neill).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"1147\" src=\"https:\/\/jruppert.metr.ou.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/image-1024x623.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1147\"\/><\/figure>\n<figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption wp-element-caption\">Overview of the ORCESTRA field campaign, including the ship track of the R\/V Meteor. The Meteor will carry the CSU-SEAPOL radar, group PI James Ruppert, and many other scientists across the tropical Atlantic from Cape Verde to Barbados over a six-week period from Aug-Sept 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission of PICCOLO is to advance our understanding of the cloud-scale processes that foster upscale development of tropical storms, which are important to the formation of tropical cyclones, among other things. A major component of this work will leverage the <a href=\"https:\/\/seapol.colostate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CSU SEAPOL<\/a> dual-polarization C-band radar to sample tropical clouds. We&#8217;ll use these observations to document the organization of clouds and their interactions with incoming and outgoing radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German research vessel <em>Meteor<\/em> will carry the SEAPOL and our group on a six-week journey across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, making transects across different cloud scenes.
